Reliving Traditional Carnival through Canboulay. 👣

The riots were a series of disturbances in the British Colony of Trinidad in 1881 and 1884. A direct mockery of the slave masters, traditions such as drumming, singing, chanting and calinda or stick-fighting emerged. The term “canboulay” coming from the meaning ‘burnt cane’ reminds us of the many putting out of fires or the laborious work slaves put in to ensure sugar cane was produced.
